(Xinhua) — BEIJING, April 14 — According to Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Zhao Lijian, China will continue to prioritize its relationship with Pakistan in neighborhood diplomacy and firmly support Pakistan's objective of prosperity and revival.

According to media reports, Pakistan's newly-elected Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif stated during a meeting with the charge d'affaires of the Chinese embassy in Pakistan that the country's new government places a high priority on relations with China and will work to accelerate the construction of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

"China welcomes Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif's statements," Zhao said during a news conference, adding that China and Pakistan are "ironclad brothers."

Zhao stated that China is willing to work with Pakistan's new government to facilitate exchanges at all levels, enrich and expand practical cooperation, build CPEC toward sustainable, livelihood-oriented, and high-standard goals, and accelerate the building of a closer China-Pakistan community with a shared future in the new era to benefit the two countries and their peoples.

Despite differing ideologies, cultures, and social systems, the Sino-Pak relationship is the epitome of long-lasting friendships. In 1950, Pakistan became the first Muslim country to recognize China, and diplomatic relations were established in 1951.

Both China and Pakistan have inked several agreements in the strategic, political, and economic realms, and both governments back each other in international forums.

Previously, diplomatic and military ties were the emphasis of relations; but, in the twenty-first century, both nations have enhanced their economic links following the signing of free trade agreements in 2007 and the China–Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) in 2015.
